How Do Cockroaches Spread Disease?

Cockroaches can act as carriers of diseases as they are harmful and spread various types of diseases. They carry pathogens like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites and contaminate food items. Some of the examples of how cockroaches spread diseases are as follows.

  • People get sick by breathing in cockroaches’ protein, saliva, or feces, which they leave on food items.
  • People also get sick by touching those areas that cockroaches contaminate.
  • People can also get sick if they consume or drink anything that cockroaches mess up.

What Diseases Do Cockroaches Cause?

  • Salmonellosis: Salmonella is an infection that is a bacterial infection. The contamination of water or food causes it. This disease affects the intestinal tract, and it is generally called food poisoning. Cockroaches generally feed on leftover open food items that contain bacteria, and these bacteria are stored in the cockroaches for more than a month; therefore, they can transmit these bacteria to other food items through their vomit or feces.
  • Typhoid Fever: It is one of the common diseases caused by cockroaches. Typhoid is a highly infectious bacterial infection, and cockroaches transmit it by infecting the food. Cockroaches contaminate food, water, and surfaces that come in contact with human beings, and the bacteria consumed by them cause typhoid.
  • Cholera: Cholera is also an infectious disease that is caused by consuming contaminated food with the Vibrio cholera bacterium. Cockroaches carry this bacteria and transmit this infection through feces and vomit. The common symptoms of cholera would be vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, lethargy, diarrhea, and other such symptoms.
  • Dysentry: It is a gastro-intestinal disease that is also caused by consuming infected food items. Cockroaches carry various types of bacteria and parasites, which are transmitted and also cause dysentery.
